Great for inside the house or for critters that hide outside Feb 08, 2008
By Barbara A. Carlson
"Hide-E-Hole Ferret Rescue"
I bought this to try with my ferrets. It would be better if the tags were smaller, but they're small enough to work if you sew them flat on a harness or collar.
I put it on a harness and let my ferret "loose" in my house. Normally they have 3 rooms they're allowed in, but they're not allowed in the rest of the house (mostly due to the "wreaking havoc" factor). I let the ferret play for a couple hours, and went looking for him once he fell asleep. I have 3 floors and a basement, and it only took me about 1 minutes to locate him. It works through the walls and floor (which can be confusing, but not horribly). He'd chosen to go to sleep inside my bedroom closet. My library adjoins the bedroom, and initially I thought he was in a closet in the library, but then I realized, it was reading through the wall and when I went into the bedroom, the locator beeped louder.
I haven't tried it yet outside (too chicken--I'm afraid I'll find the tag and not the ferret) and I have to see if it will still work if the ferret climbs inside a metal pipe, but this has some possibility.
The locator and tags are plastic, and won't withstand being immersed in water (but the website does include instructions for making it more resistant0, but the technology works, and I wanted to support the company so they'll have the capital to continue to improve their product.
The product would be most useful for items lost inside (your house, for example) and animals that tend to hide inside or if outside will hide and be still (and not come when you call them like ferrets and cats).
Ferrets and cats both are the kind of animal that if they slip outside will become frightened and hide. Most are too frightened to even come when you call them. This locater would be able to find those fairly easily. Ferrets are always trying to get out, and it's extremely difficult to find them. They *usually* stay close to the house, but if you walk and call them (and even if you squeak toys they normally come to) they will often not budge. This only has a range of 1/10 of a mile, but if you're walking around your neighborhood, you will get a reaction and know which area to check rather than just wandering around clueless.
I'd be a lot happier if it were smaller, and I have some concerns about putting it on anything besides a break-off collar or harness, due to the animal getting caught and strangling itself trying to get loose. They're less likely to strangle on a harness, but would be more likely to get stuck on something. But if you went looking quickly, being stuck isn't as much of a danger.
If you have a cat that is always trying to slip out the door, or a ferret with a known history of escaping, I'd strongly recommend getting one of these. Don't leave it on while the animal is in the cage, of course. Never leave the house without knowing where your ferret is ... don't assume he's asleep somewhere. The best way to keep track of your ferret is to check on them frequently...they are always trying to kill themselves!

Great for finding my cats! Jul 04, 2008
By K. Horn I have had the loc8tor for about a year. I live in an area with coyotes so if one of my 4 cats get out of my home, time is of the essence! Even when I only suspect one has escaped it helps me find it quickly - lots of hiding places in this big house.
It has saved me tons of TIME and WORRY! It may have even kept them alive.
Tip - I cover the tag with a cut off finger from a rubber glove and secure it with a small rubber-band. works great!

It's nice, not thrilling, but nice Mar 25, 2008

I recently lost my cellphone so I thought that this would be an interesting way to add to my security. I like it in theory but it could use a bit of a tune up.
My main issue is that the signal strength indicator numbers (two digits) fluctuate a little too much for my taste. It can be a little difficult to just walk around and follow the signal. I found myself having to move slowly from point to point, pausing to rotate this way and that, then continue forward. However, I think that with a little practice, one can learn to conduct a faster search.
I don't know if adding an external antennae would extend the detection range significantly. But if it could, then by all means it should be included. That's my opinion.
A directional finder would be nice too, like the kinds you see in the movies with the four arrows. But I guess that'd really add to the cost.
A smaller issue would be a sturdier Loc8tor unit. It'd be nice if the manufacturer used a sturdier plastic.
One thing I would like to see are smaller, flatter, and sturdier tags. It wouldn't be impossible to stick one of these in a wallet, but it wouldn't fit snugly in there. The plastic is a little brittle and I can imagine someone just snapping a tag off with a good tug.
I paid only $119 which is much less than the average price for the Loc8tor Plus. So for me, the price is right. Plus I get four detection units which is nice.

Great Functionality for the Tag Size/Price Aug 20, 2009
By P. Scott Pope

Three years ago I purchased this device from UK-based Loc8tor before it was even sold in the US. As an early adopter who works on the investment side of the wireless industry, I was eager to use the tags on my key ring and items that might be targets for theft. In general, I have been happy with its performance. It is not without flaws, however.
My initial reason for purchasing the Loc8tor for location of lost keys and, potentially, for tracking belongings that may get stolen. For the latter application, I also thought this could be used to augment GPS tracking of stolen items for where room-level position accuracy might be valuable and GPS satellite reception is not possible. While it has worked reasonably well as a key finder, I have not yet attached the tags to other high-left-risk items. My one concern on that front is the audible beeps of the tags when activated. This feature has value in its intended function but may alert thieves. Additionally, the tags beep on occasion even with fully charged batteries. I have been unable to determine why this occurs.
My job requires that I often frantically work from home in the morning and then race off to work so I was particularly interested in having a means of quickly finding my keys in the event they were misplaced in my apartment. The two or three times that I needed to use the Loc8tor, it has worked rather well for this purpose. The direction finder, which uses both audible beeps on the Loc8tor itself, and visual cues such as bar that increases in size when getting closer to the tag in question, is very user friendly. It would be nice to have a true directional locator in the form of a compass-like readout, but presumably this would have a required a more expensive location sensor.
There are a couple of issues with this device that, in my opinion, are understandable given its price and the size of the tags. First, the tags are not sufficiently loud so that an elderly person could hear them on separate floor. If you need that level of audible signature, you might want to try the Brookstone Key Finder, which has much larger and louder tags but no direction indicator and no signal strength meter. Rather, the Brookstone device is merely designed to initiate the audible pings when necessary.
Another annoyance, which should be addressable by Loc8tor engineers, is the occasional erratic beeping of the tags even with new batteries. It appears that the tags are incorrectly sensing that the batteries are getting low. Incidentally, the tags require two batteries that cost approximately five to six dollars each. If you use or test the tags regularly, they batteries will last less than a year. On the other hand, I have used tags infrequently where the batteries have last 1.5+ years.
The range of the device is adequate, but I doubt it would be strong enough for a locating someone or something several hundred feet away. In fact, the signal is quite week when placing a tag in a drawer two rooms away. It would seem unlikely that you could locate a child at Disneyland a few thousand feet away, or in a shopping mall where the tag is in another store or on another floor.
In summary, this is solid tracking device given the price. Yet, it ideally suited for finding keys, not children as some have suggested.
Pros Small tags Reasonable price Locating device has signal strength indicator Reasonable life of batteries (1+ years) depending on usage
Cons Tags not thin enough for a wallet Tags seem to beep for no reason sometimes, even with fresh batteries Batteries can get expensive No true direction finder/needle Tag beeps could be louder Could always use greater range

disappointed Dec 24, 2007

I am disappointed with the LOC8TOR Plus Pack. The manufacturer suggested it would be a good product to use to track my dog. Great in theory, but in reality, the LOC8TOR Plus range is so tiny that I can only track my dog if he is in eyesight. Well, if I can see him, then I wouldn't need a device to track him. A hundred and sixty bucks wasted.
