Great Game, but... Jan 18, 2007
By iix It does not work in Windows XP or above. Even when changing the settings to Windows 98 or 95 compatibility mode is does not help. Actually the game will run, but will freeze at completely random spots. We've got 30 some copies of this game in our computer lab at the school I work at and we can't use them. It used to be a favorite of almost every 4th and 5th grader in the building. Anymore, the kids the that know about the game don't even try. It just doesn't work anymore. Bummer. The kids loved it, fantastic educational game, easy to learn, overall a challage to play... and we can't use it.

XP compatability Mar 27, 2009
By hopalong I put the disk into drive and it insalled but didn't run with my XP. I went to control panel and removed that installation then reinstalled the full program through the control panel. After installing and closing out I reopened Control panel and selected 'Help'. Under what's new in Windows XP go to 'Music,Video,Games and Photos'. Next sreen choose 'Games'. Choose 'Fixing game problems'. Choose 'Getting older programs to run on XP'. On the next screen click on the highlighted 'Program compatability wizard'. Click 'Next'. Choose 'I want to choose from list'. Click 'Next' Highlight 'Where in the World is Carmen' Choose 'Next' Choose 'Microsoft Windows 98/Windows ME' Choose 'Next' Pick '640x480' Choose 'Next' Now you're testing it, hope yours works. Mine works great. It only changes the compatability for the program you've chosen so you don't have to worry about changing anything back for other programs.

Works with Vista May 16, 2010
By ChristinaK Don't be fooled by all the reviews here that say that this game doesn't work with Windows XP or Vista. Most of us don't know how to change our program settings off the bat to make it compatible, so that's why everyone's having problems and assumes it just doesn't work. There's another review here that explains one way of making it work in XP, or you can (after installing the game) just right click on it in Vista, go to "Properties" then "Compatibility", then change it to Win 98 and change the setting to run in 256 colors and 640x480 screen resolution. That has ended all my crashes, and made the game run in full screen mode. As far as the game itself, it's decent, though I don't know why it's a "school" version that I purchased for home, but whatever. My kids enjoy it, and the only major difference I've notice in the style of the game from when I was a kid is that there is not a reference book to accompany it, rather it just has it's own search engine within the game that the kids use to look up the clues. I recommend the game and I plan on getting Where in the World when they're done with this one. ***Update*** Crashes and works terribly on Windows 7 on my Gateway desktop. Uninstalled :(
